Anyone wanting to copy Pita Gus Sowakula’s stunning hurdling try is out of luck, with World Rugby ruling that jumping over opponents will now be deemed illegal.

The Chiefs No 8 scored an athletic five-pointer in his side’s opening-round Super Rugby Pacific win over the Highlanders in Queenstown, leaping above the attempted tackle of Aaron Smith on his way to the line.

FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia’s national teams and clubs from international football on Monday as sporting bodies around the world moved to bar Russian athletes from competing in international events in protest over the war in Ukraine.

The likes of former All Black Charles Piutau and ex-Wallaby Israel Folau can play for Tonga from 2022 after a groundbreaking World Rugby council vote last month.

The council voted to amend World Rugby’s eligibility rules to allow players to change Test teams during their career after a three-year stand-down period and providing they have “a genuine, close, credible and established national link” to the country they now wish to represent (such as having a parent or grandparent who was born there). Under the previous regulations, a Test player could only change allegiance through an unintended Olympic sevens loophole.

Fijian Wallabies inside centre Samu Kerevi was named in the World Rugby XV Dream Team for 2021 securing one of the two Wallabies in a selection dominated by the Soth African Springboks.

Jacques Nienaber’s Springboks are the dominant force in the selection with Eben Etzebeth leading the charge towards securing five places in an XV featuring players from eight different countries. South Africa signed off on their 13-game season with a last-gasp loss last month to England at Twickenham.

World Rugby has announced Australia as the preferred candidate to host Rugby World Cup 2027.

The announcement follows a World Rugby Council meeting where Council members voted to accept a recommendation from the Rugby World Cup Limited Board to work exclusively with Australia to finalise a hosting model for the 2027 edition of the tournament.

New Zealand Rugby [NZR] has responded to allegations made by Black Ferns veteran Te Kura Ngata-Aerengamate against the team’s head coach Glenn Moore.

Ngata-Aerengamate, a 32-test hooker who was part of New Zealand’s 2017 World Cup-winning team, took to social media on Monday to reveal she had a mental breakdown during her side’s recent winless tour of England and France in November.

Sir Ian McGeechan has called for South Africa to join the Six Nations in a bid to raise the standards of the leading northern hemisphere sides.

In its current guise, the Six Nations comprises of teams solely from the northern hemisphere, with Wales, Scotland, Ireland, England, France and Italy all competing.

World Rugby has announced sweeping changes to the community game that could see teams reduced from 15 players, matches no longer played over 80 minutes and weight bands introduced in the youth game.

From January 1, 2022, 10 optional law variations aimed at improving participation will be free for World Rugby member unions to use at their own discretion.
