The Olympic champions were playing in their first World Series tournament since Dubai and were given a rude awakening with a first-ever defeat to Ireland in their opening game.

The Fiji Airways Fijiana Sevens who played both finals of the opening tournaments of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series will have to readjust in the next leg of the series with the inclusion of champions Black Ferns Sevens.

Tokyo Olympics gold medallists the Blacks Ferns has been included with the Olympics bronze medallists Fijiana in Pool B of the Malaga Sevens tournament which also includes the USA and Canada.

A reward of $13,500 (100,000 Rand) has been offered for “information leading to the recovery of Werner Kok’s Blitzbok jerseys,” after the South Africa was robbed earlier this week.Kok shared on social media today the campaign that has been set up, which is in association with Richmark Holdings and SA Rugby Legends association.

The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team has improved from last week’s tournament putting in a better showing in the 5-15 loss to the Australians in the final of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Dubai.

Fijiana lost 7-22 to the fleet footed Aussies last week but shut down their attacks keeping them out in sustained attacks from the opening whistle before the first try by Faith Nathan in the fourth minute.

Fiji Airways Fijian Sevens skipper Josua Vakurunabili led from the front scoring the opening touch down of a five try rout in avenging the loss to Spain for the ninth and tenth positions tonight at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Dubai.

Vakurunabili scored in the third minute followed by tries from Kaminieli Rasaku in the fifth minute, Iowane Ratuciri in the eighth minute and Iowane Teba in the 13th minute.

Ginger haired playmaker Alowesi Nakoci scored a double within the eighth minute in the last Pool B match to help Fijiana defeat France 17-12 to advance to the final of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai.

Winger Reapi Ulunisau scored a third try in an individual effort wrong stepping the French tacklers to run over fifty metres clear under the posts to score the winner in the 11th minute.

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s men’s will have a chance to avenge their loss to Spain in their Pool C encounter yesterday when they meet again in the ninth place play-off at 9.57pm tonight at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Dubai.

Fiji defeated Canada earlier this afternoon 33-19 in the last four placings, ninth to twelve, and Spain downed Japan 31-7 in their encounter for Fiji and Spain fighting for number nine and ten and Canada and Japan playing off  for the bottom of the pile later.

The Fiji Airways Fijian Sevens team will have to watch Argentina new addition 21-year-old Marcos Moneta who scored against Fiji during the Tokyo Olympics semi-finals.

Moneta who was the top try scorer at the Tokyo Olympics has been named in the Pumas 13-member team in Dubai this weekend and will face the Fijians in their final pool match tomorrow morning.

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team face their toughest challenge in Pool C against Argentina in their final pool match at 1.24am on Saturday in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Dubai.

“It’s the ever improving Argentinians, very physical, very combatative and very aggressive team,” said Interim head coach Saiasi Fuli in a Zoom media conference meeting from Dubai early this morning.

Interim Head Coach Saiasi Fuli received a welcome asset to marshal the attacks in the second HSBC World Rugby Sevens series in Dubai for the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team in the form of playmaker Terio Tamani.

“Yeah Teri brings experience to the team in terms of his role in the restarts, he controls the game; he is one of our operators, he can manage the team by controlling what we can do well,” Fuli said
